 It was a day August, 1949, when a football match was in progress between Calcutta Bhawanipore Club and Cuttack XI. The then Chief Minister Dr. H.K. Mahatab while witnessing the match announced to the public, that Cuttack will have a Stadium. Thus became the birth of Barabati Stadium. He donated and area of 240 acres of land on an annual lease of rupee One. It was an evening of 1949 when four friends proposed the stadium. They were Mr. J.J. Hyde, Mr. Bhairab Chandra Mohanty, Mr. Sailen Kumar Roy and Mr. Mihir Kumar Rao. Mr. Sailen Kumar Roy over a cup of tea suggested to raise resources through a raffle and thus Barabati Stadium, the first composite stadium of East at that time, was built. All the resources sere raised through raffle which was first of its kind in India.


The stadium has witnessed many important national and international events in the field of sports, games and cultural activities.
