Trakitions assign the founding of the city of Cuttack in the year 989 A.D. by the king Nrupa Keshari of Keshari dynasty. The city was liable to be inundated by the two rivers i.e. 'Mahanadi' and 'Kathajori' which cover the city on three sides. As protection against this, "Baimundi"- a villager of  Bidanasi-advised the king to build stone walls around the city for protection against flooding by the rivers. King Markat Keshari took the initiative to build this stone embankment as a protection in 1006 A.D. It is said "Baimundi" was assigned the work to supervise the construction of this embankment. The original stone wall is still protecting the areas of Chahata, some portions of Naraj and Purighat.
