During the rules of Marhattas Chauliaganj was the epicenter of Army barracks. English General M.L. Settet visited these barracks while he was on his way to Sambalpur in 1766. During English rule these barracks were used as arms and ammunition centre. Presently the campus is being used as the head-quarter of 6th battalion of Odisha State Armed Police Force (OSAPF).
